Vehicle Speeds and Speed Humps - Empirical Data
This Portland Oregon site details the response of
vehicles to speed humps from 31 different streets.
The data indicates that a 4 metre (14 foot) wide
speed hump is effective at slowing traffic 150 m (500 feet) before the speed
hump and 100 m (350 feet) after the speed hump. Elbow Park is installing 4 m
wide speed humps throughout the community. Prior to placing speed humps the
speeds were about 50 km/hr (32 mph). After placing speed humps speed 150 m
before the hump decreased to 35-43 km/hr. At the hump speeds decreased to 25-35
km/hr. 100 m after the speed hum speeds had decreased to 35-43
km/hr.Optimum speed hump placement is
between 100 and 150 m
