New Trees around William Reid School!
Six new trees around William Reid School will be
planted in the spring of 2004
The City of Calgary Urban Forestry Department has
responded positively to the request from the Parent’s Council to plant
trees on the perimeter of William Reid Elementary School. In the spring of
2004,
six
trees,
including Ash, Bur Oak and Elm will be
planted on the perimeter
of the
William Reid and St. Pat’s school
field (2 along 12th St. and 4 along
10th St.) The six trees is the maximum that the City is able to
provide the school as a result of “utility conflicts” and
“plantable space”. The utility poles and wires along
36th Ave. near the teacher’s parking lot do not make planting
in that area “sustainable”. The six trees will fill in the gaps
along the perimeter of the school that is
plantable.
The possibility of obtaining
funds from the Calgary Board of Education to plant trees around the parking lot
and playground areas will be investigated.
The six trees for William Reid is a
direct result of the “Elbow Park Urban Forest Management Plan”. The
plan, recently completed, was created in partnership between the City of Calgary
Urban Forestry and residents of Elbow Park community. Residents from Elbow Park
and staff from the City walked through the neighbourhood and identified the
areas most in need of tree planting. The long-term tree-planting plan was
established and will be used for at least the next five years to plant
approximately 50 trees within Elbow Park per year.
